Migratory Week Bird Count

This Saturday, May 6, is the beginning of our Handlan bird count, which extends through Sunday, May 14. The goal is to see how many species our bird club members can collectively find during this week. We do the count at this time because it's the prime week for bird numbers, as the nesting migrants have returned and the species that nest further north are migrating through our area. The birds are very vocal and active now, so it's a great chance to practice and improve our birding skills.  This year we're going to extend our boundary and say that birds counted anywhere in the state of WV are fair game for the count.

Please send Jim Waggy your bird lists by Sunday, 5-14,  either of his email addresses: needwildnature@gmail.com or truthseeker23@hotmail.com  If you find birds that are uncommon, please mention where you saw them, as people will be interested in knowing.

The Handlan Chapter of the Brooks Bird Club  conducted a Migratory Week instead of the former Century Count.  It took place from May 2 through May 10, 2015.

Location:  Kanawha & Ohio River Valley Areas

General weather:  Dry, Mild, Warm
