HANDLAN CHAPTER NEWSLETTER - MARCH 2005

 
Meeting:   Monday, March 14, 7 pm, room 204, activities bldg., First Presbyterian Church.  Speaker will be Joe Candillo, "Comparing American Indian Cultures" (see Joe's website http://www.earlyamericanwv.com/)
 
News:   *Great Backyard Bird Count, results can be seen at http://www.gbbc.birdsource.org/ and they show that 92 species were tallied in WV, including these (and # of each): Bald Eagle-8, Golden Eagle-2, Ring-Necked Pheasant-1, Red-Headed Woodpecker-6, Loggerhead Shrike-1, Ruby-Crowned Kinglet-2 [way to go, Hullet!], and Catbird-1. 

 

        *Spring Migration Weekends:   Brooks Bird Club's own terrific birder and bander Joey Herron will host 2 special weekend events at Jackson's Mill in May.   Each 4 day/3 night event costs $299, more info and contact details are available from this newsletter editor.

 

        *Chapter logo:   The committee met with graphics design students of the Putnam Career and Technical Center and continue to work toward a logo and brochure.

 

        *Books:   It is worth repeating that the chapter is very grateful to the Friends of Blackwater for housing our book collection.  The book committee has some exciting ideas to share with you about the history and future of our 500+ books, particularly at the April meeting.

 

        *Public Relations:   Brooks Bird Club information, along with that of our chapter, will be on display at Wildlife Diversity Day at the Legislature and at the WSAZ Garden Show in Huntington (March 11-13).

 

        *BBC Midwinter Meeting- On Feb. 25-27, folks enjoyed programs by John Smith and renowned photographer Bill Beatty, and took field trips to Spring Hill Cemetery and Greenbottom Wildlife Management Area.
