December 2014

Christmas Dinner

The Handlan Chapter of the Brooks Bird Club will hold our annual Christmas Party/Dinner at Harding's Family Restaurant, at 6:00pm on Monday, December 15, 2013.  In addition to good food and socializing, we will have some of our traditional bird-related games.  We will also discuss details of the Christmas Bird Count which will take place on Saturday, December 20.

So that we will be able to have appropriate seating, would you please let either myself or Joan Steven know if you plan to attend (non-binding reservation) if possible.

The results of the "straw poll" about what folks would like to see as their state bird (We were not actually considering trying to replace the Northern Cardinal)

    Cardinal...................8 votes
    Screech Owl............2
    Eastern Towhee......2
The following each had one vote each: bluebird, blue jay, Turkey Vulture, Veery, Redheaded Woodpecker,
     and Redbellied Woodpecker.
Here is a link to a good listing of all the "State Birds" -
Here is the list of the group's suggested "best birding places" that perhaps we will get to visit this coming year:
Kanawha State Forest (including Overlook and Rattlesnake Trails)
Springhill Cemetery
Coonskin Park (including the "plateau")
the pond behind DOW/Carbide (now off limits)
Beechfork State Park
Hanging Rock Observatory
St Albans Park
Moncove Lake
