The Annual Christmas Dinner was a Great Success

The Handlan Chapter of the Brooks Bird Club held our annual Christmas Party/Dinner at Harding's Family Restaurant, at 6:00pm on Monday, December 15, 2013.  In addition to good food and great socializing, we had some of our traditional bird-related games (Thanks to laura Ceperley).  We discussed details of the Christmas Bird Count which will took place on Saturday, December 20.

Thanks to Joan Steven for organizing the dinner at Hardings, and putting out festive and appropriate table decorations.

Handlan Chapter - Brooks Bird Club

The Kanawha-Charleston CBC took place last Saturday, December 20th, with ten teams searching for species throughout our designated circle.   Twenty-five volunteers participated in count activities and among us, we found 61 species of birds.  The weather was very cloudy and much colder than the previous week.  Temperatures ranged from 27 to 40 degrees for the day.  These conditions may have resulted in lower numbers of many of the common species.  Three new species were added to our list this year:  Ross' Goose, Bald Eagle, and Rufous Hummingbird.  We also had a record number of Rusty Blackbirds (200) and matched high counts for Merlins (2) and Pied-billed Grebes (24).
