March Meeting of the Handlan Chapter of the Brooks Bird Club

 

Come to the meeting of the Handlan Chapter of the Brooks Bird Club Monday, March 18, 6:30 at the South Charleston Library.

Barb Koster will be doing owl pellet dissection.  All interested birders are encouraged to attend and try their hand at it..

The Board will meet at 6 pm.


 

 

Recent Birding Outings

Doug Wood led a birding visit to Ward Hollow Wildlife Habitat on Saturday February 23, 2013 .
This short outing was well attended by about 20 folks.  Jim Triplett listed the birds we saw:

Doren Burrell and Laura Miller led a field trip of eight folks to Green Bottom Wildlife Management Area on Saturday morning, March 2nd.
According to Doren:

 

The morning's viewing started out well
with a Bald Eagle posing quite regally in the sunlight. Other highlights
of the excursion included Tree Swallows, Eastern Phoebes, a Fox Sparrow,
a couple of Green-winged Teals and Ring-necked Ducks, as well as hotdogs
and cheese fries at Hillbilly Hot Dogs.

One of the group, Kevin Cade, reported that after parting with the Handlan Chapter group at Greenbottom Saturday, he headed to R.C. Byrd locks. At the nature preserve ponds, he found one Horned Grebe and also had good views of a male Northern Harrier in the adjacent fields.
 

 

 

 

Christmas Bird Count Summary from Audubon

The 113th Christmas Bird Count took place from December 14, 2012 through January 5, 2013. Check out the report on the Audubon CBC website.


 

 

Wendy Perrone, Executive Director of Three Rivers Avian Center reports that they were able to release a young golden eagle on Tuesday.

There is a video of his rehab and release.  His left
middle toe was caught in a leg-hold trap set for coyotes and bobcats in
Monroe county, WV, resulting in a broken toe.  He healed up well, the
toe is fully functional.  The video is available on the TRAC website:

Saturday  April 6, 2013 ?? There will tentatively be a outing on the Carriage Trail.  Confirmation and details to be announced later.
Monday, April 15, 2013 at 6:30pm The Handlan Chapter of the Brooks Bird Club will have the  regular meeting at the South Charleston Public Library.

Sue Olcott from DNR will talk on the upcoming breeding butterfly atlas. 

Board meeting at 6:00pm.

Monday, May 20, 2013 at 6:00pm Annual Spring Potluck Picnic.  Details to be announced later.

 

Saturday March 16th at 1pm Pocahontas Nature Club is sponsoring a talk at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory( NRAO) classroom  in Green Bank, WV.


Doren Burrell will be speaking about bird migration.  Everyone is invited.
