Annual Spring Potluck Picnic

The Handlan Chapter of the Brooks Bird Club will have the annual Spring picnic on Monday, May 16, at 6:00 at Coonskin park.

This is a potluck dinner, so bring a covered dish of your choice - main dish, dessert, or salad.  Water and ice will be provided as will plastic plates, cups, dishes, table cloths, eating utensils.

We are aiming for shelter #19, where we have used the last few years.  If for some reason #19 is not available when we get there, we will use either #18 or #20, which are in the same general area.  See the map.  At the Gorman area (on the right), turn left - pass through the gate and go up the hill - go all the way up the hill until you see several picnic shelters.  Turn right into the parking lot for shelter # 19.

Hope to see you all there.

The map is a bit outdated due to the new entrance to the park, which is just a little north of the Mink Shoals exit off of the interstate.

Do not forget the Annual Migration Count

The Handlan Chapter of the Brooks Bird Club will conduct our Migratory Week Bird Count beginning this Saturday, May 7 and extending through Sunday, May 15. For this count, we are keeping track of how many different species we find. You don't need to count the total number of individuals for each species.

The count territory includes anywhere in the greater Kanawha Valley and Ohio Valley areas. Early May is the best time for us to see a wide variety of species, as the migrants who nest here are newly returned and active, and the birds that will travel further north to nest are now moving through WV. So this is a great time to practice and improve our birding skills. Whether you do a little or a lot, at your feeders or in the deep woods or wetlands, the idea is to have fun with it, learn a few things, and enjoy this magical time of spring.

To participate in the count, just keep track of the species you identify over this nine day period. When you've completed your list, please email it to me. Jim Waggy will compile the results and we'll discuss them at our May meeting.

Russ Young will be conducting his Spring Hill Cemetery bird walks on both Sunday mornings that fall within the count period. Meet at 8:00 a.m. at the cemetery office for those walks.

Email a list of results to Jim Waggy at truthseeker23@hotmail.com or needwildnature@gmail.com
