President Jim Smith called the October meeting of the Handlan Chapter to order, and welcomed those in attendance.  There were 44 persons present.

Jim called attention to upcoming outings, speakers and activities.

(1)   Trip planned to Kanawha Falls, etc. –November 3.  Chuck Wirts and Jim Triplett will lead a water birding trip to the Falls on November 3 with November 10 as a rain date.

Meeting place will be Daniel Boone Park @ 9 am.  Plans are to do some birding at Daniel Boone Park before leaving for the Falls area.  Possibility of lunch afterwards at Glen Ferris Inn.

(2)   Next meeting, November 20 – at South Charleston Library with our own Pat Barker talking about Panama and her recent travels to that area.

(3)   Christmas Dinner, December 10, 6 pm, at Shoney’s on the Boulevard.

(4)   Christmas Bird Count, December 15 – returning to Morton’s for food and tally.

Jim reminded us that it is time to pay our dues, and Connie will collect them.

Doug Wood has been working with persons at Ward Hollow (Dow Center) and will be looking for workers in the Spring.  There was some conversation regarding being able to use that area for birding and Doug suggested we contact him and he will help supply names to facilitate this.

Jim Waggy introduced Dr. Bryan Watts from The Center for Conservation Biology at William & Mary.  Dr. Watts started his birding career with the Handlan Chapter and presented a very interesting program on bird migration.

Birding Trip planned for Saturday, November 3

Trip planned to Kanawha Falls, etc.  Chuck Wirts and Jim Triplett will lead a water birding trip to the Falls on November 3 with November 10 as a rain date.

Meeting place will be Daniel Boone Park @ 9 am.

Plans are to do some birding at Daniel Boone Park before leaving for the Falls area, probably stopping at the Marmet Locks   Possibility of lunch afterwards at Glen Ferris Inn.

Some may wish to go on to Hinton and check out Bluestone Lake and the New River after the stop at the Kanawha Falls.

It has been pointed out that due to the Hurricane Sandy and its projected collision with cold air from the northeast U.S. there's a decent possibility for some very interesting birding in the next few days.  Since the week around Nov. 1 is usually when ducks start to arrive in decent numbers in the mid-Atlantic, we could see a major influx as the normal movement south is augmented by storm-driven birds forced to put down due to the bad weather.

The public is welcomed.  Bring binoculars and scopes, if available.  Club will have some scopes to share.   Check this web site for updates, especially for changes due to weather.

See you there.
