March 2017

March Meeting

The Handlan Chapter of the Brooks Bird Club will have our regular February meeting on Monday,  March  20, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. at the South Charleston Public Library. Note that this back to the regular third Monday of the Month.

Paul Wallace will discuss a Panama trip

Anyone interested in birds is welcome. Hope to see you all there.

There will be a board meeting at 6:00pm

In January, Lauren Merrill discussed PHENOLOGY at the monthly meeting of the bird club (Handlan Chapter).  I thought all would be interested in the attached website which shows several interesting display regarding SPRING-- we are 20+ days early relative to 2012.  The National Phenology Network is a great place to browse about phenology and advancing seasons.  And if you are really interested, join it and start entering your observations!

Any chance you folks could help out with Sara's walks, especially on June 3?

The following is the descriptions for the walk from the KSF website. I am attaching outlines for the leader requirements for the event just to make it more reader-friendly. It's pretty straightforward, but it's easier to lay out in bullet points. I will make sure Kevin and the new assistant (woohoo!), Steven Browning, know what's going on, so that they can open up the Nature Center on those days. I will have materials prepared in advance, including a bird tally sheet, sign-up sheet for hikers, and binoculars for borrow. We will want to get them signed up as an official volunteer ahead of time (quick and easy).

June 3

Birding around the Sun as a National Trails Day Hike
Pigeon Roost/Ridge Roads/Black Bear. Difficult, 4 miles, starts at 11:00 a.m. It's also National Trails Day!

Hike & explore Kanawha SF through the seasons with Saturday bird hikes. As the earth travels around the sun, observe the changes in bird behavior, from singing and nesting to migration. Learn about birding, bird ecology, and why birds are important parts of the natural environment. We will try to exceed our previous year's count of 65 species, and celebrate at the year's end by looking back on our adventures.

Meet at the Nature Center 15 minutes before we embark. Hike locations will be on a rotating schedule, and hike routes will be of varying levels of difficulty. We post "Birding Around the Sun" dates on our calendar for where we will be heading each week and at what time, and look to the Kanawha State Forest Foundation Facebook page as well for any changes in schedule. Event is free to everyone. Stay as long as you like. Dress according to hike difficulty and weather. Bring water, a snack, and binoculars. A few (3) pairs of binoculars are available for borrow.
